He was about to lose his mind. Mina was situated in a sidecar in a teal blue that perfectly matched Trouble’s bike. A helmet on her messy mop of curls and braids Lucky had done with superhuman speed. There were bikes behind and in front of him as they all drove to Mina’s school. He could only imagine what they looked like pulling up. Huge, tattooed men on motorcycles in leather escorting a tiny hippie in training to Kindergarten.

They pulled up, and they backed up to the curb almost as a single mind. Parking and turning off the engines in unison. Mina was right in the middle of it. Trouble’s leather jacket wrapped around the cream-colored two-piece outfit. He was still amazed by the craftsmanship.

He parked his vehicle and groaned as he saw Elijah running across the street.

“What the hell is going on?”

Elijah cussing even hell was almost unheard of, but there it was. “The guys showed up this morning to escort her to school.”

“I can see that.”

He followed Elijah’s gaze to where Trouble was taking off her helmet. Trouble lifted Mina from the sidecar and then removed the leather jacket.

“Wow, where did you get those clothes, they’re beautiful.”

“Lucky made them plus several others. Apparently, he thought my fashion sense wouldn’t encourage enough individuality and self-expression.”

“You have weird friends.”

“I do. I’m still a bit overwhelmed by what they all did.”

“I’m not exactly used to them and probably never will be, but they treat you and Mina amazingly.”

“They do, especially Trouble. I don’t—”

“Don’t question it. Just enjoy it. You’re very lucky.”

Something in Elijah’s voice made him jerked his gaze to his brother. There was a hint of sadness in Elijah’s eyes. He’d never quite seen his brother look that way. Elijah gave up a lot to raise him. Postponed college, and in some ways Elijah was postponing his whole life, or he was stuck in a permanent loop he couldn’t break free from. He knew Elijah hadn’t gone on a date in a year or more. Suddenly he felt like a selfish shit and wondered how much Elijah had missed out on being essentially a father since their parents had brought him home. He didn’t even have any faded memories of his parents ever doing anything with him. It had always been Elijah. He suddenly wrapped his arms around Elijah and hugged him tightly.

“What—”

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Everything, you were the best Dad a little shit like me could’ve had.”

He had heard Elijah’s faint sniffle before the older man pulled away. “Stop making any more of a spectacle of yourself than you already have. We already have a huge audience.”

He turned to find most of the parents and kids outside the school staring at them. All he could do was smile. He shook his head and walked toward Mina standing with the guys in a protective half-circle behind her. She had a rainbow backpack slung over her shoulders with peace signs hanging from the zippers.

“Are you ready,” he asked as he crouched down beside her.
